Character Analysis

Narrator- The narrator is a character that has
many problems. He is very nervous as well as paranoid about life. There seems
that he has something wrong mentally with him. In the end the mental state is
proved when he murders the old man.
v
Old man- In the story we do not know much about
the old man. However, we do know that the old mans eye scares the narrator,
which causes him to be murdered. Also the story describes the old man to be a
light and sensitive sleeper.
v
The neighbor- The neighbor in the story is very minor
but plays a significant role in the story. The neighbor hears the old
mans yell and notifies the police. However, we do not know anymore about the neighbor.
v
Three police men- The police are notified by a neighbor
because he or she heard a scream late at night. Three of them arrive at the narrator’s
house and search all over for evidence of a crime. They find none, but the
narrator cracks under pressure and explains what happens. The police play no
other roles during the short story.
